THE EVENING TELEGRAM. VOL. 14. PRICE : ONE CENT. ST. JOHN'S, NEWFOUNDLAND, MONDAY, FEBRUARY 29, 1892. $3.00 PER ANNUM. No. 50 NOTES OF THE DAY. Speaking of Mr. A. B. Morine's defeat in tbe Queen's County election, tbe Halifax Recorder observes :—"Mr. Morine said in Queen's : • Tbe Government sent mc bere.' And tbe people sbot him back again to tbe bands of tbat Government. What will tbey do witb bim?" Tbe probabilities are tbat tbey will remit bim to tbe Confederate Party here in Newfoundland—tbe »« Patriotic (?) Association"—wbo will employ bim in certain unsavory work against tbe Liberal Party. Tbe Tory Party in tbis colony are always ready to utilize tbe services of this 44 Dugald Dalgetty" of tbe political arena.' •*> To quote again from tbe Halifax liecorder of tbe 11th :—44 All honor to Queen's County. Sbe bas given tbe heartache to tbe Boodle Brigade from tbe Atlantic to tbe Pacific; tbey are in a depressed condition to-day wherever tbe intelligence bas reached. We can fancy tbe perturbation of tbe Bogus Reciprocity Delegation to Washington, wben tbey and tbeir retinue of attendants beard tbe news." ♦ Tin; Opposition organ puts on an air of injured innocence in regard to tbe coastal steamers, and wbiningly says:—44Thie paper never published any remarks upon tbe subject." Our sinuous contemporary sbould take a little quinine and try to tone up bis memory a bit. Some of us are under the impression tbat be has said a great deal —sucb as it is—4l upon the subject," including mucbtbat is false and misleading. Does be forget the efforts he made last fall to create alarm in tbe community, by maliciously stating that the Volunteer had typhoid fever on board, and makiug other false assertions calculated to damage tbe Company's interests ? Tbe Herald, on certain occasions, finds it very convenient to bave a bad memory, and the present seems to be one of tbem. But tbe Herald cannot deceive the keen eye of a discerning public. •♦•- On Saturday last we published a telegram from Harbor Buffett in which occurs the following sentence :—44 Tbe people bere have lost severely by not having telegraphic communication, and will only support, at tbe next election, tbose wbo will give tbem sucb connection witb tbe main land." Of course, we duly appreciate tbe spirit of enterprise which prompts the good people of Haibor Buffett to desire telegraphic communication with tbe main land, and their present membere—Messrs. Emersen, O'Dwyer and McGralh—are just tbe men to do everything possible to obtain for them tbe boon tbey demand But it must be borne in mind tbat Harbor Buffett is an island, and that six miles of cable would need lo he laid to t ffect tbe desired communication. This, at a cost of £5,000 a mile, would involve an expenditure of £30,000, or 8120,000. Perhaps it would be cheaper to ruu a branch railway to some point opposite tbe island, and connect by means of a ferry. Tbe latter idea would be more within tbe grasp of tbe Government. However, tbe people of Harbor Buffett may red assured tbat tbe matter will rtceive due atteution from tbeir energetic representatives. THE ASSEMBLY'S SYMPATHY. Wiikk tbe Assembly met, tbis afternoon, tbe Hon. Colonial Secretary -eferred to the Trinity disaster in very touching and sympatbetic terms, and moved that tbe House adjourn till Thursday next. Tbe motion was seconded by Mr. Morison, wbo spoke in bigb terms of tbe Government's promptitude in sending a steamer to search for the missing men. I MJBW ADVKRTWKMMTM.
