THE EVENING TELEGRAM. VOL. 14. PRICE : ONE CENT. ST. JOHN'S, NEWFOUNDLAND, TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 1892. $3.00 PER ANNUM. No. 45- NOTES OF THE DAY. Three sailing vessels are reported from Cape Race today. Tbe ecboooere Empress anil Rise Over passed last evening and a forigantine tbis morning, all bound inward. ♦ Tiik entertainment al Centenary Hall to-morrow (Wednesday) evening, promises to be tbe most attractive and enjoyable of tbe season. Tbe music will be a special feature. Some of our leading vocalist 9 and instrumentalists have been engaged for tbe occasion. ♦ By to-day's public telegram we learn that tbe Pope bas addressed an encyclical letter to tbe Frencb clergy, showing that any form of Government is good that tends to promote tbe public welfare. His Holiness holds that all ought to accept legally-established Government, but contends that legislation hostile to religion cannot be approved. ♦ Tbe subject chosen by Rev. Brother Slattery for his lecture before the Athenaeum on Monday next ia: " Humour— Reflections by an Irish Fireside." Our readers may safely look forward to the event with a good deal of pleasurable anticipation. No doubt a large audience will welcome tbe reverend gentleman to tbe platform of tbe AtbeDu'ura. ♦ Wk learn from the Montreal Gazette that tbe Canadian Customs department bas taken further aciion in tbe case of Davi Isod, tbe fugitive Toronto trader, whose estate was seized some time ago. Tbe investigation showed that two cases of silks from Switzerland were entered in the outturns as woollens of no commercial value, when they were really valued at 53,000. Tbis practically forfeit* the whole estate. Davidson, who is in Buffalo, is not likely to return to Canada. -o- Touching the danger of exposure at funerah, referred to by us yesterday, Rev. Mr. Kerr, rector of St. George's Church, St. Catherine's, is tvidenlly a level-headed man. Tbe other day, in that place, the burial occurred of a prominent resideut, and before leaving the Church Mr. Kerr said that bowever well aud reverent it appeared to see pall-bearers and others with beads uncovered over the grave of a deceased friend the cu9toru was a dangerous one in our severe winter climate, aud could well be dispensed with. He trusl«'d that the pall-bearers and others who accompanied them to witness tbe last tad utes would keep their heads covered ou the occasion and remember that they came to hury the dead, and not to kill the living. It would be well if every minister in Newfoundland had courage enough to give voice to a similar admonition. LOCAL EVENTS. A Slight Outbreak of Fire.—A fire occurred iv Mr. Sleater's house last evening about eight o'clock, but was extinguished by him without outside aid. It happened in one of the children's bedrooms on the second floor, Home clothing, hats and wall paper having been coneumtd, and for a lime made quite a blaze ; how it originated is unknown. *m» The S.S. "Labrador's" Trial Trip.—The steamer Labrador made a trial trip of her new machinery this aTternoou, and, seemingly, to good purpose. The intention of getting her down to whence she will clear out for the seal-fishery, is likely to be frustrated, owing to the prevalence of ice. «»» The Drama in Aid of the Night School. —M'Liss will be played by the Josie Mills' Company this evening, for the benefit of that admirable charity—the Rev. 1). O'- Brien's free night-school. The drama is a most interesting one, founded ou one of Bret Harte's tales of Western pioneer life, and deserves to be haudsomely patronised, not only on account of its merits, but also by reason of tbe most deserving institution it aids. jfKW ABIKRTINKMKHTi. T-his i-s a newly •invented explosive, lately introduced and largely eaed in England, Germany, Spain, Turkey, Australia and New Sooth Wales. DOBURITE is especially valuable on account of the perfect safety with wbich it may be bandied, transported, and stored. Neither friction, nor heat will cause it to explode, and it is only wben primed by a specially stronjr detonator that it can be exploded. It lias the following special propertie> and advantage* over all other explosives:— Koburile cannot be made to explode by conclusion, by pre* Mire, friction, nor by lire, lightning, or electricity. Koblirite can be made to explode only by the insertion of a >tronn detonating cap into Ihe cartridge, and is therefore perfectly safe and free from danger under nil conditions of trat..»it, storage, and handling. Koblirite contain* no nitroglycerine, and is therefore not subject to the excessive danger from change of temperature and thawing, Roburite rfoo motfreezt. Koblirite may he hammered between two hteele plates, and a red hot iron may lie inserted into it, free of danger. Koblirite has the further advantage of giving oil' no noxious fumes, and not pulverizing the material blasted, and miners may re-enter the galleries immediately after a shot is tired. Koblirite is practically Hameless, and can be safely used in fiery mines, neither fine dust nor gases being exploded by it. Koblirite is of less specific gravity than dynamite, in the ratio of 2 to ?>, but weight for weight it is found to be 25 per cent, more powerful and 100 limes more safe. Koblirite compares with gunpowder as 4 to 1, weight for weight, i.e., i oz. of Roburite will do the work of 1-lb of bla-ting gunpowder. 30 Cases received per steamer Havana, and 5 M.
