THE EVENING TELEGRAM. VOL. 14. PRICE : ONE CENT. ST. JOHN'S, NEWFOUNDLAND, MONDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 1892. $3.00 PER ANNUM. No. 38 NOTES OF THE DAY. Out correspondent, "Adieu," bit right out from the shoulder in his letter of Thursday last. It was a virile production and one to the point. 0 "Hk was good to the poor ! " Such was the comment that was heard above all else at Cardinal Manning's fnneral. Tbat is a a great epitapb. The Opposition organ's remarks of Saturday anent tbe proposed reciprocity conference at Washington will receive our attention in due time. Our contemporary has made another wretched exhibition of bis ignorance in respect to this matter. ♦ We have received, per Conscript, two more highly interesting letters from our venerable and talented Toronto correspondent, tbe Rev. Philip Tocque, M.A. Another vigorous communication from tbe pen of Mr. William Stowe, of Boston, is also on our desk. ♦ The Boston Advertiser of tbe 28tb ultimo says:—"Tbe expedition for tbe relief of tbe Peary party will soon start on its way. Since its recent spell of cold weather, Boston can sympathize witb all residents in tbe polar regions, and can tender Lieutenant Peary its sympathy." Those Herald critics wbo talk of tbe M extravagance" of our present Government and shout about retrenchment, are in danger of being considered punsters rather than economists. The people do not forget tbeir recklessness during tbe Tborburn Administration. ♦ Out Harbor Buffett correspondent telegrap9 us that herrings struck in there in great abundance on the 11th instant, and tbat one man secured a hundred barrels. Tbey are plentiful enough, it is said, to load the whole herring tleet. But tbe trouble is, there are no vessels available to take tbein. Here is a splendid opportunity for our enterprising merchants to do a big stroke of bus'ißess in tbe berring industry. ♦ It cow transpires that " tbe agreement of last year " concerning our dispute witb France has not yet been presented to the French Chamber of Deputies. At any rate, Mr. Lowther, Secretary of tbe Foreign OHice, has expressed himself to this effect in the British House of Commons. Thus we have another proof of tbe little interest taken in Newfoundland affairs by the Imperial authorities. NEW AOIEKTIWEJIENTW. „InUU Railway. f NOTICES.
