We had hoped tbat our repeated warnings to the Herald would have caved him from bia present humiliation. However, when editors of newspapers diarcgard good advice, and ppreist in reckless mendacity, they must Buffer the constquence. The "Patriotic (?) Association," whose mouthpiece the Herald assumes to be, certainly occupy a most unenviable position in the eyes of the public. For our part, we wish them joy of tbeir organ. ♦ — Somk twenty American vessels have cleared from Black River up to date with tmd salted herrings in bulk, some cargoes of tbe latter being very large, the total aggregating not less than 18,000 barrel:*. Fifteen vessels are still at Barren and Woody Islands, with part cargoes. Some of these are nearly loaded, and all hope to be ready to leave in a few days. Tbe figures here mentioned do not include the salt herring taken by our local vessels, and by people on the shore, namely: Messrs. llano, 1,000; J. E. Burgess, J. & W. Stewart, Albert Bradshaw, Levi Frost, and several otbers. In all, about 30,000 barrels have been taken, at an average of $1.20 a barrel. The large amount of money thus expended has been distributed and circulated amongst the people. m We desire to call the attention of our readers to a number of extracts—two columns in all—in to-day's Telegram, from Inked States and Canadian papers, on our forthcoming Industrial Exhibition. Witb a single exception, tbat of tbe Montreal Gazette, all our contemporaries speak in tbe most encouraging terms of this important enterprise. Pretty well all the leading Boston journals regard it as the most significant step in tbe way of progress tbat Newfoundland has yet taken, and predict from it great and abiding results. Tbe Montreal Gazettt . of course, is not friendly, for lb« fcimple reason tiiut its inspiration is iluwn norn a correspondent here whose hostility to the present Government (nnder whose auspices tbe Exhibition ha 9 been launched) is an open secret. It seems a great pity that politics should be even remotely connected witb tbe undertaking- But we have faith in tbe patriotism and good sense of tbe Commissioners ! —#. If m hope deferred maketb tbe heart sick," then the Canadian " reciprocity commissioners " must be in a pretty bad condition by tbis time. Mr. Blame bas been playing witb tbem like tbe private tutor plays witb bis pupils. Tbe teacher says: " Be good boys, and, later on, I'll take you all to tbe country." Mr. Blame intimates to Ministers Thompson, Foster and Bowell: " Stop your boodling, mend your ways, try to make yourselves agreeable to your neighbors, and when you are better men, and I have more time, I'll allow you to come on to Washington and make your proposals with respect to tbe matter of reciprocity." At any rate, our Boston correspondent, Mr. William Stowe, telegraphs us tbis afternoon that Mr. Blame bas sent word to tbe Canadian Commissioners to meet bim in Washington on the 17th inst. Yesterday's public message stated tbat they were to stait for tbe American capital to-day, and, no doubt, tbey bad their luggage packed, and were ready to take tbe train when tbe disappointing message was received Secretary Blame's game with the Canadian Ministers reminds us of Gulliver among tbe Lilliputians.
