THE EVENING TELEGRAM. VOL. 14. PRICE : ONE CENT ST. JOHN'S, NEWFOUNDLAND, THURSDAY JANUARY, 28, 1892. $3.00 PER ANNUM. No. 23. Latest by Telegraph. FROM BAY OF ISLANDS Tie GloDcester Schooner "Wintlirop" SAILS UP TOBIRCHY COVE. (Special to the "Evening Telegram.") Bay or Islands, This Afternoon. We are enjoying unprecedentedly fine weather here. The Humber River is free of ice, and the schooner Winthrop, which has just arrived from Gloucester, is sailing up to Birchy Cove. There is nothing to prevent the Curlew making another trip. It is impossible for the overland couriers to get along, owing to the mildness of the weather. Those engaged in the winter herring fishery are seriously retarded in their operations. SUMMARY OF THE DAY'S NEWS. The Archbishop of Rimoueki died last night. " The steamer Portia passed west at 11.30 last night, and the SS. Havana at 1 o'clock to-day. Heu Royal Higbneee the Princess of Wales and Prince George intend to make a tour of tbe Continent. We learn from to-day's public telegram tbat France and the United States are negotiating treaties for extradition and reciprocal trade. It is rumored in Harbor Grace tbat Carbonear is to have a new doctor in abort in tbe person of Dr. W. Hogan, who bae just arrived here from St. Mary's. A powerful protest against tbe Game Preservation Society's proceedings appears iv tbe Telegram to-day over the signature of Rev. George H. Bishop of Hermitage. The PL α-nix Literary Club of Carbonear wae closed at the end of the year. The cauee alleged is tbat it did not pay, and i« was reluctantly compelled to be closed Tbe billiard tables, which formed part of the property of tbe Club, are to be sold. For tbe pa*t month tbe M toilers of the sea" at Harbor La Cuu have experienced very mild we&lher; bo much to that it bas been utterly impossible to keep bait in a fit condition to uee. Consequently fishery promptcte are looking extremely dull there, wbicb we very much regret. Tin. trade iv frozen herring bas been injuriously affected by the long continuance of mild weather. Owing to the length of time that herrings were barred waiting fora cbange, eeines rotted in tbe water. Tbe conßKjuent lose will be severely felt, as very few of tbe fishermen who owned those seines can now replace them. Some acts of thieving have lately beeu committed on board vessels anchored at Harbor Grace. In tome cases rigging, blocks, stoves, and gear which is usually left on board the schooners when they are moored for tbe winter, have been taken. No clue has been discovered by which the offenders can be traced. A son of Mr. John Hackett, of English Harbor, F. 8., who went out on a shooting excursion recently, ie supposei either to have lost his way or fallen through tbe ice and perished. He was only 22 years of age, and was an excellent and industrious young man. The Telegram sympathises with tbe sorrowing relatives. It is a bopefnl sign to see those who, in weak moments, bave been tempted to defraud tbe revenue, making restitution to the public treasury. To-day the Hon. Receiver General bas received the sum of forty dollars from an anonymous smuggler, as conscience money. The usual acknowledgment appears in another column. The sacred concert which came off in Si. Andrew's Church last evening was well Httindcd, and tbe rendition of tbe various musical selections is described to us as having been very tine. The range and variety of the voices were of marked aed superior character, and blended in a harmony that inteipreted tbe various pieces with splendid effect. Hi i, Trepey correspondent informs us tbat a man, wbiie cutting wood, about three milts from the settlement, yesterday, came to a large tree, which be commenced to hew dowo, when a bird, uearly as large as the blackbird, 11-w from the top branches. Oo closer examination, a not was discovered near the top of the tree, in which were two young birds as lively and comfortable as they would be in summer. The birde are known there ac ** toptree birde." Our correspondent adds: ** I drove in this morning to satisfy my curiosity, and found the man's report correct, as I caw the mother bird fly away from the neet, ant! caw the young ooes also." Says our Harbor Grace contemporary :— " News of a romantic affair comes from a settlement about half way down the North Shore. It seems that two young men of different settlements were paying their addrees to one young woman, and as a natural con*f quence one of the two men had to make room for the otbtr. The young lady must have been inclined to the one as much as to the other, as she could not give either the conge. The men, however, eooo came to a decision in the matter; they would fight for the privilege of vieitiDg the borne of the fair one. A meeting wa- arranged, to take place on a certain night, but on the advice of the older men the fight was deferred —the daylight being preferable in their opinion for euch a meeting. On Thursday last the M meet" took place, and one of the men, of course, came out beet, but our informant id in the dark, as much as we ourselves are, it iLt' appeal to arms met the txigtnciea of the cast', or whether the whipped in whipptr btcaiiiC the girl'a best tnao. However, we should not be surprised to learu that botb were diecarded by the young woman, and if bhe did, many would say she acted sensibly." MR. JOHN J. PURCELL Thanks the Electors of Ward 3.
