THE EVENING TELEGRAM. VOL. 14. PRICE : ONE CENT. ST. JOHN'S, NEWFOUNDLAND, WEDNESDAY JANUARY, 27, 1892. $3.00 PER ANNUM. No. 22. SUMMARY OF THE DAY'S NEWS. The Opposition ere beginning to realize that Confederation is their only hope. A Tim m 1 v correspondent writes as to say that the anti-Confederate feeling np north is stronger tban it was in 1869. The Opposition candidate should take his veracity with him the next time he ventures into No. 4 Ward. It is not easy, in these enlightened days, to win an election by misrepresentation. Councillor Power has good reason to be jubiliast over hie brilliant victory in Ward Four. Every influence of the Obstruction Party was pitted against him; nevertheless he doubled his majority of the previous election. Tut: Herald is striking out wildly. Like his prototype, Don Quixote, be sees a political adversary in every windmill. He is desperately in need of a Government situation, but mu9t change his tactics and hie vindictive disposition before he get 9 one. Wahd Two could have a much worse representative than Mr. Soutbcott. He is a comparatively young mau of independent means, and iillid with a desire to merit the cooGdence reposed in him by his felloweitizens. We are confident Mr. Soutbcott will not disappoint their expectations. So he very luge codfidU were caught io Trinity Bay last week, ami oue of them contained a French houk of uiudeiu shape. The hook furnisher wuat our legal friends would call '• cucuaistaotial evidence " that tbtbc !Un came from the Banks and not from the Diliio hatchery. The Opposition Parly are in a sorry plight. Tbeir leader has forsakep them and they know not wbat to do. Mr. Greene, it Iμ said, refuses to head their baker's dozen in the House of Assembly during tbe next session, and the honorable gentleman for Fogo is eeriou&ly thinking about joining tbe Government. So, you see, they're obliged 10 fall back on the member tor St. Uaibe. Obviously, tbe affaire of tbe Opposition are in a bopeleae condition. The steamer Portia, Captain Ash, sails this afternoon, taking the tquivalent of about eleven hundred barrels in fiah products of various kinds. Her paesengera are : For Halifax —Mrs. J. L*sb, Mr. and Mra. .1. B. Ayre, Mrs. C. W. H. Tessier, lire. Cairns, Mies Cooke, Messrs. J. F. O'Brien, Strong; three in steerage. For New York—Mrs. T. Winter, nurse and tbree children, Mr. and Mrs. Martin, Mr. and Mrs. Delgado, Mr. William O'Dwyer, Misses McKenzie, Miss Mary Ayles. RUSSIA has again turned her persecuting hand against Poland. We learn from today's public message that the Poles will observe the centenary of Ibc partition of their country. Tbe probabilities are that they will make demonstrations by no means pleasing to their Muscovite oppressor. Seiious riots have already occurred iv Warsaw. The Russian Government has cloeed the Roman Catholic Cburcbes and Convents in Podolia and Valhynia, and natuially tbe excitement has been greatly intensified. Poor Poland ! M Freedom shrieked when Koßciueko fell," and bae been shrieking there ever since. Henry Buell, of Fortune Bay,had a most eventful bxperieoce on tbe 29th of last month. While hunting, oome ten or twelve miles from tbe eettleneiil to which he belong, u\<j wdlvis suddenly leaped out of the brash-wood and attacked him. With his email fowling- piece he shot one of tbeorutee, killing it instantly. Then a desperate tight took place with the other, during which Buell's arms and legs were painfully lacerated. Finally, however, be managed to recover his gun, which had dropped from bis hands at tbe beginning of the light, and, watching his opportunity, struck the wolf a terrific blow, crushing in its skull and knocking the life out ot it. Buell, who is a very powerful man, then and there improvised a Bled, on which he hauled the dead wolves to his home. The skins and skulls he intend* to send on to the Museum here. A gratifying expression of loyalty ie that which comes from the Begum of Bhopal. It still further illustrates the moral influence of British rule in India. The Marquis of Lansdowne and party have recently been making a tour of the Indian provinces, aud they were everywhere received with tbe warmest expressions of loyalty and devotion to British interests. Among tbe places visited by the viceregal party was the state of Bhopal, which is ruled over by a Begum, wbo ie regarded ac tbo best governor in Inuia. Tbe Begum, in welcoming tbe viceroy, said: ** I confidently hope his Excellency Lord Lanedowne will, on a suitable occasion, convey to ber Majesty tbe Queen and Empress my dttermination always to exert myself in the interests and for the welfare of my people, as well my fidelity and loyalty to ber Majesty. Furthermore, that ber Majesty's moft i.'lieditiit et-ivant, Sbabajehao, will ever be ready wub all bie forces, subjects and ibe resources of this ttate to render services of whatever kiod to the British Crown, and, if necessary, to sacrifice his life for ber Majesty." aim * i>vi:iM a*a;?ii:va* Auction—land and liouse Hynes & Burke Greatest race of the fcasou at Parade Kink McCall's bazar paitetn* at Milligan's bookstore Prime fresh turkejs J. & W.
