THE EVENING TELEGRAM. VOL. 14. PRICE : ONE CENT ST. JOHN'S, NEWFOUNDLAND, TUESDAY JANUARY, *6, 189 a. $3.00 PER ANNUM. No. 2i. SUMMARY OF THE DAY'S NEWS. A HKiGAXTiNE called the Corsican passed Cape Race to-day, jast before the enowstorm came on. No otber vessel has been sighted there sioce last report. The Guardian of Villa Nova begs to acknowledge, with tbanke, tbe receipt of twenty dollars (820), from M. H. Carty, Esq., M.H.A., being tbe beqoest of tbe late Thomas Mullins to the orphans. It is etated that tbe American expedition for relief of tbe Russian famine is likely to fail. Tbie seems strange ; a great and reeourccful country like tbe United States ought to be able to overcome almost any difliculty. Thk Kirk folks are preparing for a grand sacred concert, to be given on Wednesday evening. Mr. Peters will preside at the organ, and amongst tbe singers will be Mrs. McKinlay, Mrs. March, Mies Jardine, and Mies Fox. Whilst Newfoundland is passing through an unusually mild winter, the people of Austria arc suffering from intense cold. Tbe thermometer there indicates six below zero—a lower degree of frost than we experienced here all last winter. We have received a very interesting letter from Frederick White, lvq., ex-M.H.A. for Bonavista district, ou the seal fi-hery. Mr. White strongly protests against the indiscriminate slaughter of old seals. His letter will appear in a subsequent issue. Thk Herald'» reply to our Placentia. corretjpondeut, "Truth," is perhaps the weakest attempt to meet a skilful opponent we have ever seen in our local press. We do not often reftr to tbe Herald's silly articles. It woui I, perhaps, be attaching too much importance to that paper, and it migbt render the self-conceit of its scribblers incurable, if we were to notice every instance of its inveracity. Hut tome of its falsehoods, as m the present case, are of such a stupid character that they deserve to be noticed as specuueiia of the extent, to winch malice and stupidity can be combined in some human brains. It looks as if affairs at. Ottawa were still in an unsettled condition. Fium to-day'a message to the Athectcam we learn that the ' Cabinet ha 3 bteo rtcoDeiiucted, with 9. C. Pattersou Secretary ot State; Cowell, Mioibter of Militia; Chapituu, Minister of Custoubs, un.'l Caroo, PuttaMtetec General. Frequent are au lufallible test of the weakness of a miuistry, and we bhall nut be (surprised to hear at any moment of a crisis fatal to the political interests of Premier Abbott and bis followers. Koough corruption baa been disclosed in official circles there lately to emphasize tbe necessity for a new Government altogether.
