THE EVENING TELEGRAM. PRICE : ONE CENT. ST. JOHN'S, NEWFOUNDLAND, THURSDAY JANUARY, 21, 1892. VOL. 14. $3.00 PER ANNUM. No. 17. SUMMARY OF THE DAY'S NEWS. Tiik revenue of the present year promisee to be greatly in excess of that of 1891. A correspondent, writing from Little Bay nnder date of January 2nd, says:— 44 Vessels are running ore from Tilt Cove to Little Bay, thus giving work to men who would otherwise be idle." We have received a vigorous communication from Placentia over tbe signature of M Truth," in reply to the Herald's abusive and vindictive attacks on the Hon. A. W. Harvey. Our correspondent's letter will appear in to-morrow's Teleoram. A scandalous ecene occurred in the French Chamber of Deputies yesterday. Tbe Minister of the Interior struck Deputy Lawr and tbe two deputies fought in the Chamber. Later on they again met and fought a duel, tbe result of which is not given. A uentleman who has recently returned from Sound Island informs us that the people there, and in neighboring places, •• were never better off than they are at present." Some of tbe American money spent for herring has found its way into every household. Wk are sorry to learn from our Trinity contemporary that two or three cases of diphtheria have lately occurred in that town, one of which has proved fatal. Dr. White ami tbe Board of Health are endeavoring to prevent the epread of tbe disease, am) we sincerely hope their ffforte may prove successful. Tiik Twillingate Sun informs us that tluriDg tbe year 1891 over twelve thousand letters were posted in tbe Twillingate poet cilice, more than 600 of tbem being registered. This number doee not include those that go iberc from the Arm way office, and besides ibeee hundreds of otuere pass through tbe cilice. Tin: Government's attitude on tbe tariff question and tbe Bait Act Iβ firmly endorsed by our people, not only in St. John's, hat also in tbe extern districts, as will be obaeived from articles wbicb we publish elsewhere from tbe Twillingate Sun and Trinity KecorO. Tbe Opposition organ's utterances are simply laughed at and ridiculed hy all classes of people. Onk of tbe members for Twillingate district corroborates the foregoing and says that bis constituents are bigbly pleased with tbe conduct of the Government in this matter. Twillingate will return three supporters of tbe present Administration at tbe next general elections. There's nothing like good management on the part of those in authority. Jt always tells effectively in tbe end. Still tbe Herald continues to blow bis little whistle in opposition. How eilly ! Wk have to thank W. H. Thompson, Esq., of Harbor Grace, for a late copy of tbe Alymer, Ont., Express, which contains a highly complimentary notice of our Christmas number and a very pleaeiog account of a brilliant weddiog there on tbe .'JOth ulltimo, at whicb tbe Rpv. Dr. Thompson officiated. We mention tbe latter circumstance because tbe reverend gentleman is a Newfoundlander whose fine attainments entitle him to our warmest admiration, as well as to tbe admiration of tboee amongst whom be now labors with 60 much acceptance. Rev. Dr. Thompson won his degree of *' D.D." when only about twenty-five years of age. l> reference to tbe qualifications of candidates for municipal offices, Mr. Gladstone cays:—" In all cases of election of members of civic corporations, and such-like bodies, tbe chief merit in candidates, after that of good and respectable character, is soundness of judgment, and after tbat, activity of hi* bite. Tbe power of fine speaking, or eloquence, is not required in eucb a functionary, and should be esteemed very lightly. Tbat wbicb m required is a power of thinking coolly, an integrity of purpose, and a willingness and ability in taking a ebare of the burdensome duties to be performed. Above all, avoid the mistake of electing pronounced religious or political partisans to important civic positions.,. We commend tbe M Grand Old Man's " advice to tbe thoughtful consideration of electors of tbe different Wards. Cut this item out, and refer to it on Saturday before polling your vote ! It would eppm, from a letter in last evening's Herald, that we have, in some way unintentionally, of course—stepped «>n the sensitive come of tbe Rev. Dr. Harvey. We are sorry for this, because we conld not, nor would we if we could, find it in our heart to hurt tbe feelings of M the dear, good old Doctor." Only in one way can we account for tbe reverend gentleman's displeasure, namely : in our issue of Monday, when referring to tbe learned Doctor's cautiously-written Water Lily article, we casually observed that" the liquor interests of tbe country have nothing to fear from tbe pen of tbe Rev. Dr. Harvey." Now, we ask our esteemed editorial brother of the Herald to candidly express bis opinion of that remark. As a most consistent and enthusiastic advocate of the great and glorious cause of temperance, does be honestly believe tbat M the liquor interests of the country have anything to fear from the pen of the Rev. Dr. Harvey?,, For our part, we do not think he'd ever hurt anything or anybody—except occasionally, when tbe disposition seizes him to take a hand in politics. Then, woe betide tbe unfortunate wigbt that happens to place himself within the tweep of bis ecclesiastical pen.
