THE EVENING TELEGRAM. VOL. 14. PRICE : ONE CENT. ST. JOHN'S, NEWFOUNDLAND, FRIDAY JANUARY, 15, 1892. $3.00 PER ANNUM. No. 12. SUMMARY OF THE DAY'S NEWS. Sorrow over the death of the Duke cf Clareoce ii profound throughout the Empire. When will the Opposition press have sense enough to know that abuse is not argument? Many of our readers will regret to learn that the eminent Sir Daniel Wilson, President of the Toronto University, is dying. Councillor Carnell is the popular candidate for Ward One. He has a most indefatigable committee, and it is said that bis election is already assured. A prominent follower of General Booth here informs us that there are 1,394 corps, 3,708 officers, and 2,468 local officers connected with the Salvation Army in the British Isles The Wards arc actiDg wisely in not encouraging lawyers to offer themselves as candidates for Municipal honors. Aβ a rule, laymen make much more desirable represeetatives than members of the legal profession. We understand that the Rev. William Graham's opening lecture of the Athern-jm course will be on the late Charles Stewart Parnell. This interesting subject, coupled with the well-known ability of the lecturer, ought to draw a large audience. A MEMiiER of the New York Stock Exchange informs us that " the prospect of reciprocity between the United States and Newfoundland grows brighter every day." This is all very well; but we should like to ccc a ray or two of light in the direction of Downing Street. Thkkk Princes, one of the Empire and two of the Church—namely: the Duke of Clarence and Cardinals Manning and Simeoni—are now lying in state, all having died within the past twenty-four hours. It may be eairi that the Christian world is at this moment in mourning. Tiir principal streets of the cily remain covered, angle-deep, with mud, and still oar present municipal councillors expect to score big votes on the 23rd instant. How unreasonable ! Come, gentlemen, let us have some inducement to go to the booths on polling day ; otherwise, our word for it, the vote will be much smaller than some of you anticipate. Frakck is the only country which approaches Great l>l itain in the strength of its navy ; but even France has only sixteen battleships in commission, as againet Britain's twenty-nine, and twenty-two cruisers, armoured and unarmoured, as compared with tifty-four; while her ** other ships" are twenty-eight, as against Britain's eixtytive. Russia has only one battleship in commission, Germany six, Italy five, Spain one, China four, and the United States none. A correspondent puts forward a plea to spare the present editor of the Opposition organ from further exposure of weakness. The plea is the rather remarkable one that the party which used him should be prepared to bear some of the responsibility. This reminds us of Sir Robert Thorburn's plea for Mr. A. B. Morine in 1885—" He is not very clean, but probably he is clean enough for the party he has been associated with."
