THE EVENING TELEGRAM. VOL. ia. PRICE: ONE CENT. ST. JOHN'S, NEWFOUNDLAND, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 29, 1890 $3.00 PER ANNUM No 256 Latest by Telegraph. TO-DAY'S BUDGET From Whitboarne Station. » (Special to the " Evening Telegram.") W»itbourne, This Afternoon. Fifty Dollars a month. Messrs. Holden and Mullowney expect to make at least fifty dollars a month, by contract, on the big rock cutting between Tickle Harbor and Ran tern. '•Herald* Falsehoods. The Herald's assertion that three hundred men were in one house without food is an infamous falsehood, as is also its statement about five hundred men being at Whitbourne. Men were induced to go to the Junction by emissaries of tbe Opposition. Mr. Middleton and his staff did all in their power to relieve them. A Blind Message. The blind telegram to the Herald, from Whitbourne, on the 24th, was written by an insincere individual who prays much, but practises little, and was sent to St. John's by train. Making: Good Wag*es. Men working on the Hall's Bay line are doing well. Four laboring contractors averaged eight shillings a day tbe past week. The rails for a distance of nearly six miles have been laid, and gangs will now go on to build tbe line from Rantem to where it is graded. This will give Mr. Middleton facilities for getting on horses, men, provisions, &c. People here are glad that Berrigau and Dwyer denounced some of the Herald's falsehoods. Two Schooners Wrecked. One schooner was wrecked at Lamaline and another near Dantzic Point in Wednesday's gale. Partridgres numerous- It is a fact that partridges arc numerous at the Station. Eleven hundred and sixteen were killed here and up at Tickle Harbor crossing. Herrings are plentiful at Bay of Islands. Boats at Topsail catch a few fish when they get out. The weather to the northward lately has been foggy. Ukc Chickens to Roost. From the numerous contradictions which the Herald has received lately over tbe signatures of aggrived people, it looks as if its falsehoods, like chickens, are returning home to roost. A WAR CLOUD. ♦ Brill Gunboats Ascend tie Shire. PORTUGAL'S MINISTER REGALLED » Halifax, N.S., Oct. 21). Portugal recalls her Minister to England, owing to the ascent of the Shire by English gunboats. The Governor General of Canada has returned to Ottawa. Cardinal Taschereau has issued a pastoral on the evils of the liquor traffic, condemning smugglers and depriving tbem of the sacraments.Balfour continues his tour in the west of Ireland and is being kindly received. Tbe Tioino troubles have been renewed and revolution threatens the canton Friburg. Osman Digna threatens an invasion of Egypt. Cholera rages at Nagasaki, Japan.
