VIEWS OF A FRENCH EX-«INISTER ♦- On the Fisheries Difficulty. TERRIBLE DISEASE IN HONDURAS. *• . Halifax, N.S., June 21. In the British House of Commons the first clause of the licensing bill was carried by a majority of four—22B to 224. Excitement prevails over the narrow escape of tbe Government. Tbe London Post publishes the result of an interview with If. Spuller, the late French Minister for Foreign Affairs. Spuller says England has no cause for alarm over the threatened secession of Newfoundland. Tbe problem is a difficult one, but of little importance. France is bound to maintain ber prestige and is averse to a pecuniary solatium. The negotiations between France and England are of an amicable nature. A terrible disease resembling yellow fever has broken out in Honduras, involving an awful death-rate. >~m • •—< CAPLIN PLENTIFUL ♦ But Codfish Scarce » AT KING'S COVE. .*. (Special to the " Evening Telegram."') Kino's Cove, Tbi9 Afternoon. Tbe weather continues very bad, and tbe staple industry is greatly retarded in conse' qucnce. Caplin bait is plentiful, but not much bus been done witb codfish so far. Tbe Messrs. Ryan are supplying fully fifty per cent, more than last year for the Labrador, tbe Straits and tbe French Shore. Their bankers have arrived from the fishing grounds with poor fares. Crews are trying to escape, having had large supplies since last March. The law should be rigidly enforced, and deserters should get six months' imprisonment, instead of three. BANKERS ARRIVING. ♦ Lobsters Very Scarce. ♦ (Special to the t: Evening Telegram.") LETTER FROM REV. A. WAGHORNE The Church Army in Newfoundland. ♦■ Editor "Evening Telegram." Sir,—This workingmen's mission to workingmen, which has gained the earnest support of 60 many of the heads of the church in England, seems, in the opinion of some of us, likely to meet a distinct want of the church in Newfoundland ; and with the settled conviction tbat, under careful management, it will probably be acceptable and useful to our people, the Rev. Wm. C. Shears, of Bay Roberts, and myself, are desirous of trying tbe experiment in our missions. The work is to begun at once at New Harbor, and, if successful, then it will probably be extended to Bay Roberts next winter. Captain Hankins, who has had eight years' experience iv Church Army work in England, Ireland and Canada, and has received lay readers' license from three Bishops, ha 9 just arrived to inaugurate the work. We hope aud believe that the movement will be ultimately self-supporting. Meanwhile, I have ventured to make myself responsible for Captain Hankins' support for one year, and am desirous to raise a sum of £2") or £30 towards this somewhat heavy expense. I shall be glad to receive donations for the purpose, and to furnish Church Army papers and further particulars. C. A. collecting cards may be had by any who may wish to aid the movement. The report of the (late) Synod Committee on lay agency may be sufficient to show that the experiment is worth a trial, and that the principles of the C. Army are sanctioned by the highest authorities. ARTHUR C. WAGHORNE. Knight's Homk, June 21. LOCAL VARIETIES The steamer Greetlands will sail this evening. She takes no freight.
