" Simply "that and nothing more !' -*♦« — We are requested to intimate that the fuoeta* of the late Mrs. Lamer will take piaoo from her mother's residence, Holdsworth street, at halfpast 2 o'clock to morrow (Saturday) afternoon. The Treasurer of the Cathedral Completion, Fund desires to acknowledge, with many thanks, the sum of Ninety Pounds, currency, the generous gift of the Rev. William Jones, M.A » Kendal, Eogland. Newfoundland SuuUy School Absooia- feet geueral*m»<mng, decided on {folding iherY raaokjhlijfoiijal convention in the falKof the present yeaVy when it is expeo ed that a large gathering of Suanay Bohool workers from all parts of the Island will assemble to consider matter* of importance to the work- , - Wl have just had placed in our hands a certain document signed by " E. i>. Sbea, Colonial Beoretary," the publication of which, a little later on, will surprise the people of this community more, perhaps, than they have ever beea surprised before. Further than that, it wifl reveal to the country the depth of imtamy to which even a prominent member of the Whiteway-Shea Cabinet is oapable of descending for the sake of retaining the emoluments oonneoted with a dishonestly-obtained portfolio. — .«., The Government had better instruct their engineer to look to the oondition of the railroad between this city and Holyrood, unless they are prepared to shoulder the responsibility of another disaster arising out of carelessness. On Sunday last the oars ran off the traok shortly after leaving the Topsail Station, greatly alarming nil the the passengers and placing in extreme peril the lives of not a few. Since then, we are told, the daily experience on that line has been such as to reduce the Company's passenger traffic to the nearest possible approach to absolutely nothing at all. What a costly eleotion kite that Railway has proved to the people of Newfoundland, to be sure ! and what a monument to the incapacity and reckless extravagance of the present dishonest Administration !! If the presumptuous amanuensis of the Even* ing Mercury only knew just about half as muoh as he pretends to know, the superficial young fellow would have avoided the ridiculous position into which his inordinate vanity has lugged him touching the wreok of the schooner * Garnet * at Dildo the other day. Had he only taken the precaution to send that perambulating illustration of lankness and vaouity—the Mercury n ostensible proprietor—over to our office, he might have ascertained the faot that the partiou" lars of the disaster in question were furnished tho Twillingate Sun by an old and muoh-esteemod correspondent cf the St. John's Evening Teleobam, whose contributions are always as welcome here as " the flowers of May." The latter gentleman will be along by next Plover from the Northward, and, if the Mercury man desire to be introduced to better company than be is accustomed to, why, let him then take his patent leather " pumps" from off his pretty little corn-crushers and step right into our sanctum mnclorum ! " Sawney" may come in, too, provided he promisee not to laugh loud enough to permit his "upper storey" to fall through during the interview. The latter gentleman " rimiled a little smile " the other day, a* he dodged around the corner of Prescqtt Street, I and it was- " wonderful to beholdf i NEW ADVERTI«FVFNTs. These Filter* etfeetually purify River, llain. Tap. Pund, Caual, or any other Water;. however foul, »n»kit „' th? uioet impure Water wholesome and sweet. They cauuot be excelled in the purity ur the rapidity of the process, whilst for Cheapness, Durability, Simplicity, Efficiency, they stand unrivalled. They are the only Filters capable of thoroughly remoring animalcule from water, and the Poisonous Salts of Lead, Lime, Sewage, all Color, Taste and Odour arising from the Decomposition of Organic Matter, and arc so constructed as to prevent the paseage of the niest minute bodies. They materially reduce hardness, ard are the only Filters which do not render water Hat and insipid, as, instead of withdrawing carbonic acid from the water, they impart it. There is no water which they do not render sparkling, wholesome and agreeable. Their principal advantage nver all other Filters is their simplicity of construction-with a cylinder, force pipe, outlet, and an arrangement of the Purifying Medium, whereby they can be thoroughly cleaned by anyone in a few minutes |;i"c(»nling to the instructions sent with each Filter], without trouble or expense, and will retain their purifyirg I owers for '20 years. This facility of cleansing coiistitutcstlu- greatest improvement upon all other Filters now made- The RAPIDITY and REGULARITY with which it performs it work , any kind of water is instantly purified, there being neither stoppage nor variation, the purified water being beautifujly soft and pure. The great defects complained of in the Sand, Vegetable Charcoal, and others, are, they do not effectually purify tie water, and are very slow in process, filtering only drop by drop, and, above all, very soon choke up and are entirely useless, as they can be cleaned omly by the repeated expeme and trouble of returniD* to the maker, and iv most cases not without smashing the Filter.
