Gordon's Position Hopeless. ♦♦. _ A REWARD FOR THE DISCOVERY OF GREELEY'S PARTY. Halifax, N. 8., April 18. The death of Uickersteth, Bishop of London, in annonnoed. Joyce, Secretary of the London Fenian*, manifests rejoioing at tbe discomfiture of the British Government, and approves of scientific warfare when handled by brave, intelligent men. Gordon telegraphs from Khartoum that bis position is hopeless, unless relief be sent there immediately. The carpenters are on strike in Now Orleans and tbo miners are rioting at Wilkesbarre. Troubles have also occurred on the Mexican frontier between the Mexicans and Americans. The I "cited States Government offers twentylive thousand dollars for the discovery of tbe Greeley explorers, or satisfactory explanation of tbeir fate. Transported with joy, the Doctor asks him to take a glass of wine with him, which wine, brought by Inez., proving to be one of the Doctor's poisonous decoctions, plunges Carlos at once into a deathlike swoon. When he is asleep, the Doctor and Inez, fearful of discovery, enter to remove the body from under Balthazar, who awakes and starts up in fear. Carlos by tbis time recovering from the effect of the opiate, contrives to get out from under the sofa, and his father meeting with him in the dark, utters a cry of alarm whichi terrifies the Doctor and Inez and the neighbors. Mutual explanation takes place, and sai.clla and Carlos prove to have been loving at cross purposes, as they were from the llrst intended lor each other by their respected parents.
