PUBLISHED FOR THE FACULTY AND STAFF OF MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY OF NEWFOUNDLAND VOLUME 1, NO. 23 AUGUST 22, 1969 MEMBERS NAMED TO RECONSTITUTED SENATE Twenty-seven faculty members have been named to the Memorial University Senate for the academic year 1969-70. These are faculty members elected by eight academic constituencies last May under regulations for the election of members of the reconstituted Senate approved March 11, 1968. Nine Senators are yet to be named. These include eight representatives of the student body and a representative of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science. They are to be elected early in the first term. The elected members of the Senate are: Dr. J.B. Littlefield, Medicine; Mr. J.B. Drinkwater, Physical Education; Mr. W.G. Rowe, Dr. O.K. Crocker and Dr. P.J. Warren, Education; Dr. E. King, Mr. E.R. Williams and Miss H. Pritchett, Junior Division; Miss J. Nevitt, Dr. S.S. Mensinkai, Mr. D.J. Murphy and Dr. G. Royce, Social Sciences; Mr. C.S. Barr, Dr. I.A.F. Bruce, Mr. J.G. Dawson, Dr. H.H. Jackson, Mr. G.E. Panting, Dr. E.R. Seary, and Dr. G.M. Story, Humanities; Dr. D.H. Rendell, Dr. P.J. O'Brien, Dr. F.A. Aldrich, Mr. P.D.P. Smith, Dr. D.H. Steele, Dr. A.R. Stein, Dr. W. Machin, and Dr. E.R.W. Neale, Sciences. The permanent ex officio members of the Senate are: Lord Taylor, President and Vice- Chancellor; Mr. M.O. Morgan, Vice-President (Academic); Mr. P.J. Hanley, Deputy Minister of Education; Dr. L. Harris, Dean of Arts and Science; Dr. G.A. Hickman, Dean of Education; Dr. A.A. Bruneau, Dean of Engineering and Applied Science; Dr. I.E. Rusted, Dean of Medicine; Mr. H.T. Renouf, University Registrar; and Mr. D.L. Ryan, University Librarian. Other ex officio members named to the Senate are: Mr. S.J. Griffiths, Director of Junior Studies; Mr. M.J. Foster, Director of Physical Education; and Dr. J.D. Eaton, Director of Student Affairs. A representative of the Affiliated Colleges has yet to be named. The new Senate regulations recommend that the representative of the Affiliated Colleges be nominated by the heads of those institutions. The list of non-permanent ex officio members is subject to annual review. SPECIAL CONVOCATION TO HONOUR THREE DISTINGUISHED CANADIANS Lord Taylor, President and Vice-Chancellor of Memorial University of Newfoundland, has announced that a Special Convocation will be held September 15 in the Arts and Culture Centre. Three distinguished Canadians will receive honorary degress at this convocation. They are, the Hon. Jean Marchand, P.C., M.P., Minister of Regional Economic Expansion, Dr. G. Malcolm Brown, Chairman of the Medical Research Council of Canada, and Dr. D.T. Wright, Chairman of the University Affairs Committee for the Province of Ontario. Mr. Marchand will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws while Dr. Brown and Dr. Wright will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Science. Mr. Marchand will deliver the convocation address. In announcing the names of the new honorary graduands, Lord Taylor said that Memorial is very pleased to be able to honour such outstanding Canadians. 'The Hon. Jean Marchand will be attending meetings of the Community Planning Association of Canada in St. Johnls in September and we are extremely happy that he will be visiting with us at the University," he said. Lord Taylor said that the choice of Dr. Brown to receive an honorary degree is one with special significance. "This year, Memorial's new Medical
