[single copies two cents.] —Drowning Casualty-^-A yonng man, Edward Elms, of Bay Roberts lost his life on Tuesday morning, hy drowning from on board the schooner Louisa, Elijah Mercer master. The craft was on her wav from St. John's to Bay Roberts with fishery supplies. When "jibing" the mainsail, about half mile off Cupids, the main-sheet broke and the boom carried the unfortunate man overboard. All tbat could be done to reecue him was .lone, but to no avail. He was about 22 years of age, and the only ?on and support of a widowed wother. A gloom wan cast over Day Roberts when the melancholy news was beard, which damped the jubilee celebration tbere. —A case against an elderly fisherman of .Bryant's Cove was recently heardN-efore Judge Bennett. The charge\was for stealing buoy- ropes of lobster pott owned by one of the local factories, which were set near FeAther Point. The accused mac waa proven guilty, and the judge was inclined to give him the fullest penalty of the law. The owner of the stolen property, however, felt disposed to have the accused let off, s course whioh His Honor reluctantly acceded to, but in doing so he gave the offender a severe reprimanding, and expressed his intention to give tbe fullest penalty in future. The rights of owners of lobster-fishery gear should be protected, and if any further acts of similar damage or theft would come before the Court the offenders will receive the punishment due to such unlawful acts. The object of the meeting was to make a concentrated effort for the general welfare of all those in Harbor Grace and Carbonesr employed oners, and to prettrva the righu .riviler.ee of the trade. In order to carry this object into effect, it waa deemed advisable and necessary to form a Cooper-** Union. A copy of tbe constitution and bylaws of the Bt.
