Mr. Lyon, of Lyon & Vcy, photographed the s. s. tt Volnntcer" and passengers from hcr deck yesterday moruing, while returning from Harbor Grace. The barqt. "Dunure'' has l>ecn purchased by- Messrs. Bowring Bros., from John Steer, Esq. She is at present on the «ock, and will hereafter be commanded by C .plain Collins. A match has been arrouged for to-morrow (Thursday) between the Nondescripts and Institute Cricket Clubs, to be played at the New Era Grounds. Wickets will be pitched at 10.30. An amusing cricket match is being played today at Plcasantvillc, by fellows who don't derstand the game. The arc known as the " Modus" versus " Vivcndi's." A boat race will take place duriog the evening, between the " Buttercup" and " Native." Last cveniug tho Fire Companies assembled at Monroe's Cove to test thc engine's power in forcing a stream of water up Adelaide Street tc the top of the hill. It proved ndecided success, 1300 feet of bos* being attached to the engine and thc water being thrown over a house on the hilltop 21 feet high. The George Street Sunday School pic-nic was held at Topsail yesterday. A very enjoyable Ume waa spent by children and teachers, the drive by train contributing a good deal tc enjoyment of thc youngsters. At 9 o'clock last night all arrived at St. John's, fully satisfied with the day's pleasure. But for tho efficiency of Constables Squires i Garland an accident which happened yesterday might bave terminated fatally. A mau named Green, who lives in a bouse on Military Road, had been reading while in bed, with lighted lamp beside, but had fallen asleep, and capsized the lamp, and the flames were blithely eatihg up the bed clothing when the constables, attracted by the flicker of light through a window, made their way into the bouse, and roughly awakened Uie still sleeping man. The str. Caspian arrived at noon to-day from Halifax after an exceedingly fine passage, the water being liko a mill pond all through tbo voyage. She will leave at C p. m. this evening for Liverpool. Here arc the passengers: From Halifax—Mrs. and Miss Kelly, Mr. Bcaven, Mr. J. J. Stitclillc, Mrs. Devlin, Miss Devlin, Dr. Carey, Miss Ryan, Miss E.
