The piper ret; By MARK VAUGHAN-JACKSON The Evening Telegram For the last few years uillean piper Paddy Keenan has been a fairly regular visitor to St. John's, flying in to work on his new solo album being recorded here. Keenan is back in the province but this time he's here to play a little music, see some sights and relax a little. The last time he was here in March he played a couple of packed houses at the Ship Inn but spent most of his time in Don Walsh's recording studio. "Every time Paddy's been here he's been here to work. He's never actually had time to just sit down and relax," Walsh said. "He loves the place but he's never had time to just sit back and enjoy it. So the Carbonear festival and St. John's festival are flying him in to play and we're doing the one gig but otherwise he's here to relax and just enjoy the place." Internationally Keenan is widely regarded as one of the preeminent players of the Irish uillean pipes. During this trip he'll be performing at the 18th annual Conception Bay Folk Festival in Carbonear this weekend and the 20th annual St. John's Folk Festival next weekend. He'll also be performing for one night only at The Ship Inn on Aug. 1 with Walsh and Fergus O'Byrne. In the early 1970s Keenan played with The Bothy Band, a group that revitalized traditional Irish music for a contemporary audience. Since then he's had several solo albums, played with on major motion picture soundtracks and with international rock and pop stars. Keenan's new album, his first solo album release in 12 years, is called Na Keen Affair and is all but finished, recorded primarily here in St. John's. The album features some of the leading lights of both the Irish and Newfoundland music scenes: ex-Bothy Band member Tommy peoples, guitarist Arty McGlynn who played with Van Morrison for years, and Niall Vallely, who O' Byrne describes as the best concertina player he's ever heard all from Ireland and O'Byrne, Walsh, Sandy Morris, Cellist Francesca Swann, Gerry Strong, and Jim Fidler all from Newfoundland. For Walsh and O'Byrne, playing on Keenan's album and performing with him on stage has been an eye opening experience. "It's a treat for me. I've admired Paddy Keenan ever since I've been in the music business. As soon as the Bothy Band came on the market I just grabbed up the albums," O'Byrne said. 'To be able to sit next to him and just play is just wonderful." O'Byrne said not only is this going to be a fine album in its own right, it will also be an album with a high Newfoundland content that will more than likely be a strong international seller. "It's a great credit to the Newfoundland contingent to be on it. Personally I'm just thrilled to be on the album with such notable people as those Irish players," O'Byrne said. As an example of the Newfoundland connection O'Byrne mentioned a tune called Kildevil Air, written by Gerry Strong, a Carbonear musicians who also plays with Walsh and O'Byrne in the band Tickleharbour. "For Paddy to pick that particular slow air, the compliment to a Newfoundland writer is just incredible," O'Byrne said. "I think it's going to be very positive on the world scene to be linking Ireland and Newfoundland (on this album). Obviously people from all over the world are going to be buying this Paddy Keenan album and saying 'Jeez, Newfoundland?' If they don't know where it is they're certainly going to know now." Walsh said Keenan's album is all but complete. The mixing is done and all that remains is the liner notes, the artwork and the final negotiations with record companies. The album should be released in late August or early September. 'The thing about this album is it is an international seller," Walsh said. "It's almost like Newfoundland making the connection, finally, with the Celtic scene that's going to be international."
