Thc pitting cost §2050, and the binding §650, in all $2700—or S27 - per volume. The present Surveyor GeneraFs exploit in his new printing industry consists of 12S7 pages, about one-fourth more than its predecessors. Of these, the pro clamations tak^ no less than 32 pp., as against thc previous 4 and 8 respective ly; tlie Journal 24G ; the appendix, in-- clinging hind tenure report, 014 ; and thc index 05; cost of printing, 82,574, binding $050, in all S3224, or just 832.24 per volume—a very good beginning for Mr Fraser. It was only a year or two ago,—the Surveyor General will probably remember ti.e circumstance ..\yell,—that this busy functionary was fearfully exerciser over theextf-avagnnt expenditure,'as he chose to call it, connected with thc then less bulk and much morq. cheaply ant fat better and more correctly printct Journals of the Assemhy. He even went so far as to make repeated visits, in tbe interest nnd at .the instigation as be averred, of the Printing Comnlittcc, for the purpose of. investigating the .mysteries of half antl whole blanks, and ((he waluef of " bastan} titles." It was but an | opportunity: surreptitiously availed V ■ . for tber purpose of acquiring a dexterity, which a thoroughly professional .man "cssional . would bo too honourable to practi thc art of making moat matter out ofthe least material. His present exploit shows how well he studied tho whole thing out, and what an expert masior of swindles he has become. Now, things are all when changed. What in thoa the Surveyor Gen . special in terest to serve except thai ment and Legislal n extrav agant waste of the public money, has become, now when the interest is all his own, a more zealous expenditure the directidn of public informatic and when matter enough enn't be discovered to fill up every page of thcbulkier and more costly volume, to that il shall reach a maximum beyond Hint of-all its predecessors, then a sufficient supply or blank pages are dexterously interleaved, into which the fortunate possessor ofthe - new volume can put as jpuch other, matter as ho pleasesj or fill them with such observations and remarEs upon the general chnraeter of the whole proceeding as may.naturally occur to.him. How very obliging of Mr. James O. Fraser; and how very characteristic of him! QUE HERRING INSPECTION IN CANADA. . Wo observe hy late Canadian exchange/, received by the steamer Ar«c- •fovndlaiul. that the subject of our herring inspection has been already before the Dominion Parliament, in' connection with a notice of motion by l'r. Fortin of tiaspo, wlio is, wc believe Canadian Fishery Commissioner, calling for nil correspondence on thc subject between tiro Canadian Government and our own. The Dominion Parliament only opened on thc 17th. and this notice wns brought on on the 23rd, showing thc importance attached to tho subject by Canadian legislators. In the course 'bf his remarks, Dr. Fortin look occasion to point otft tlu- necessity that existed, from tho 'anadian t stand-point, for issue of tho proclfyniation bringing the act rwtoiring inspection into force. He ia responsible for the statement, also, that of 1220 brls. of our herring imported into Queboc, all of whieh purported to have been inspe :t- ed and were branded as No. 1, upon pro- v iier inspection at 'Quebec 8-tCL barrels • were found to class No. 2, 103 barrels as No. 3, 2LS barrels as ri\sty, and 5 barrels as sour—not a solitary barrel ranking No. 1. Of* 18,435 barrels branded No. 1,- and reinspectcd at Montreal, 14,912 barrels were found to grade No. 2, 1,572 barrels No. 3, and only 557 barrels No. 1. In view of these facts and for tho protection of Canadian fisherme\v i/ho were compelled to subniit^heir fish io government inspection and pay a chargefQr tho same, the application of thc inspection law to Nuwfoundland herring became necessary. L*r. Fortip maintained that the fishermen of thc k>wer St. Lawrence had of lato years become more proficient in the art of curing the lish, ahd that - thoir herring would now compare favorably with those from this colony. The second session of tho fifth Dominion Parliament was opened in Ottawa on the 17th uUp., by tho new Governor-General, the Marquis of Liths- downc. Tho second''session of our Fourteenth Assembly will jboopienedon the\14th inst.—St. Valentine's Day— happy-~oinen, wc presume, of hippy pairing. Let us hope that on that day tho " birds of a feather, will Hock to- Lgother,'' and the crows, vultures aod jackdaws he lett to their own evil machinations.
