COJJSMAN NEWSPAPERS Vfflti s- FISHING GEAR, *c, Drowned.—On Saturday night between 10 and 11 o'clock" a middle aged jman named David McKee was drowned by falling from the jferry floats on the Western side'of the harbour. The body I was recovered on Sunday efternoon and 'was broughfto the Dead Jfouse, where J Coroner Earl held an Inquest yesterday. It was shown that /deceased was under the influence of liquor on Satur-. day night, and in one of his pockets was found a I >ottle.of liquor. v . "I Firf>in Carleton.-LA few minutes j, _ before 12. o'clock last night a fire broke out in a cottage off WinslOw street, Carleton, owned and occupied by Capt. [Caleb P^k. The fire (irs^made its ap- ipearance in the attic' and had made Mtt qt n considerable head way^ before it was dis- U ^.1 v/j covered, so that tbrfamilv were able to save very little of the/furniture in the upper partxof the-house. Th© fire^. men were very prompt in getting their engine to the spot, but their efforts seemed to have very little effect^on the fire which burned slowly until the supplied to order mwith despatch, and] building was entirely destroyed and one or two out-buildings were slightly Ndara- aged. Tlie house was insured for $800 V the bridge leading to M. L. -Tacker's Mill, raising the water 10 feet and carrying away lumber. Another occurred on Wednesday following, breaking cup the ice in the. river. Quite an excitement took place at East Brook bridge, at 11 O'clock, p. m., on the return of the people from a temperance meeting. The ice suddenly broke up; came dowa th». river at a terrific rate, and brought u* against the-bridge, making a noise i it could be heard for a considerably-ds* tance, raising tne water, sweeping away^-- feri&es and piling huge ice cakes'in the road.
