| Abstract | This book describes the history of the Highlands of Scotland, with a large portion devoted to the Jacobite uprisings and the battles fought by Prince Charles Stuart. Chapters describe the warlike attitudes of Britain and France, the departure of Prince Charles from Edinburgh the Battle of Preston, the Seige of Carlisle, and the resignation of Lord George Murray. A large section of these volumes document the Scottish retreat, and the final Battle of Culloden, in which many of the Clans were decimated by the English forces. The acts against Scottish culture and dress in the Highlands, enacted by the British Parliament, are also discussed, along with the Highland clearances of the 19th century. |
