| Abstract | This book is a history of Newfoundland. It contains chapters on the pre-Columbian discovery of America, the rule of several kings, including Henry VIII, Edward VI and James I, as well as the beginnings of the Commonwealth. Other sections deal with the battles fought at St. John's between the English and the French, the attempted expulsion of settlers, the Treaty of Utrecht, the importance of the fishery, and the reign of Queen Victoria. This text also deals with topics such as the riots in Conception Bay during the 19th century, the English and French lobster factories, St. Pierre and Miquelon, and railway construction in the colonies. |
