141.	Farm-cottage, camp and canoe in maritime Canada : or, The call of Nova Scotia to the emigrant and sportsman	This book includes information on sports in Nova Scotia, such as hunting, salmon and trout fishing, cock shooting, and moose hunting. The cycle of seasons in Nova Scotia is described, as well as the wild ponies of Sable Island, a summer sail to Labrador, and the popularity of sports on the East Coast of Canada. One section of this text deals specifically with hunting areas on Cape Breton Island. A number of photographs and illustrations are included.

142.	Farthest north : being the record of a voyage of exploration of the ship Fram 1893-96 and of a fifteen month's sleigh journey by Dr. Nansen and Lieut. Johansen	These volumes document the journey of the Norweigan ship 'Fram' into the Arctic for exploratory purposes during the years 1893 to1896. The problems faced during the voyage, including dealing with the extreme weather conditions are depicted in detail. Other chapters document the sled journey that two of the members embarked on that lasted fifteen months, encounters with wildlife such as walrus, and taking care of the sled dogs. Several illustrations accompany the text.

143.	Festivals, games and amusements : ancient and modern	This book describes festivals and celebrations in ancient Greece, Rome and Jerusalem. Ancient Greek and Russian dramatics are discussed, along with the Olympic Games, gladitorial combat, and ancient Roman games. Field sports and archery as a form of entertainment are also discussed, as well as bullfighting and animal baiting. Several chapters deal with sedentary amusements, such as minstrelsy, music and playing cards.

144.	Fifty years with the Baptist ministers and churches of the Maritime Provinces of Canada	This book discusses the history of the Baptist religion in the Maritime Provinces. A large section on the establishment of churches in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick is included, as well as a chapter on Prince Edward Island. Biographical information on several Baptist ministers from the Maritimes is also contained in this text.

145.	Fighting sports	This book contains information on several types of fighting sports including cockfighting, dog fighting, bullfighting, and boxing. One section contains information on animal fights from around the world, with examples such as monkeys fighting dogs, or rhinocerous fighting elephant. Several illustrations are included, as well as historical information on each sport.

Five years in Damascus : including an account of the history, topography, and antiquities of that city; with travels and researches in Palmyra, Lebanon, and the Hauran	This book documents the author's travels through Lebanon, Greece, and Syria. Some historical accounts of these areas are included, as well as topographical and geographical information, and some commentary on the culture of the inhabitants. Several chapters are devoted to the Druze population in Lebanon and their practices and culture, as well as the Cedars of Lebanon. Most of the information in these books is centred around the city of Damascus and its history, such as the spread of Christianity, the rule of the Turks, and the Muslim dynasties. Chapters include information on the ancient city walls, the slave markets of Damascus, and the river Jordan. Several illustrations are also included.

147.	Forest life in Acadie : Sketches of sport and natural history in the lower provinces of the Canadian dominion	This book is a zoological and botanical study of the forests of Nova Scotia. It contains chapters on the different types of vegetation that can be found, along with sections on moose and caribou hunting in Acadie, the American reindeer, fish and fishing in Acadia, as well as some information on Newfoundland. Seasonal weather patterns and tips for hunting and camping are also included. A number of illustrations can be found within this text.

148.	Forest scenes and incidents in the wilds of North America : being a diary of a winter's route from Halifax to the Canadas and during four months' residence in the woods on the borders of Lakes Huron and Simcoe	This book documents the author's journey from Halifax to the Hudson Bay area. Chapters include a description of the city of Halifax, the journey from Halifax to Pres'que Isle, then to Toronto, and the summer journey along the St. Lawrence to Quebec. The author concludes the book with some further remarks on the emigration. A map of the journey is included.

149.	Four years in Secessia : adventures within and beyond the Union lines ; embracing a great variety of facts, incidents, and romance of the war	This book is an account of the author's experiences during the American Civil War. Chapters include information on his movements with a Union army regiment throughout Arkansas and Mississippi, as well as his capture and subsequent imprisonment at the hands of the Rebel army. Several descriptions of life in the rebel prison camp are included, as well as sections relating to the dismal living conditions, the treatment of women by the rebels, and eventually the author's escape. Chapters also include some information on the damage done to American cities in the Southern States, and how they will be rebuilt.

150.	Fragments of earth lore : Sketches & addresses, geological and geographical	This book deals chiefly with the history of glacial times and the origin of surface features in Scotland. Chapters describe the physical features of Scotland, the origin, growth, and decay of mountains, research on glacial geology in Scotland, the geographical evolution of Europe, and the evolution of climate. One section of this book deals with the expedition of Dr. Nansen and his findings. A number of geological and geographical maps accompany the text.

151.	From Damascus to Palmyra	This book is a collection of paintings that document important cultural aspects of Syria, Lebanon and Greece. Some historical information on these regions is also included, such as a discussion of the religious differences between Eastern and Western cultures, Arab life in desert villages, and the city of Palmyra. Illustrations include important religious structures, such as the Great Mosque of Damascus, the Acropolis, and the Temple of Venus, as well as some pictoral representations of the inhabitants and culture of these areas, such as a Druze woman, native houses in Palmyra, and the Sheik of Palmyra. A brief description is included with each illustration.

A number of different cocking breeds are also included, with the fighting prowess of each discussed at length. Training tips for those who wish to become involved in cockfighting can also be found. There are several illustrations.

Genuine letters and memoirs, relating to the natural, civil, and commercial history of the islands of Cape Breton, and Saint John, from the first settlement there, to the taking of Louisburg by the English, in 1758. In which ... the causes and previous events of the present war are explained	This book is an account of the histories of the Islands of Cape Breton and Saint John, or Prince Edward Island. Many of the chapters dealing with Cape Breton discuss topics such as the community of Louisbourg, the animals found on the island, manners and characteristics of the native population, and military establishments. Several sections are also devoted to the Island of Saint John, including letters describing the government and customs of that area. An account of the English Seige of Louisbourg in 1758 is also included in one of the letters. Other letters discuss the importance of Cape Breton to both the English and French powers.

154.	Georgius Agricola De re metallica	This book is a translation of the 1556 edition of Agricola's work on metallurgy during the 15th and 16th centuries. A brief biographical account of Agricola is included, as well as the original Latin writings. Other chapters deal with mining techniques for gold, silver, and iron, including illustrations describing each.

155.	Glimpses of the past : History of the river St. John, A.D. 1604-1784	This book is a history of the St. John River Valley in New Brunswick. Chapters deal with topics such as the local Maliseet Indians, the French commanders in Acadia, King William's War, war with the Mohawk Indians in the 18th century, rival claims to the river, and the French positions along the St. John River. Other sections deal with hostility against the French, with soldiers from New England and Acadia fighting along the river. The history of the Maugerville settlement, and biographies of several founding fathers are also included. Some information on Presbytarianism in New Brunswick is also presented. There are a number of maps and illustrations in this book.

156.	Gold and tin dredging and mechanical excavators, with classification, test and valuation of alluvials	This book is a description of gold and tin dredging and excavation techniques. Chapters describe the definition of dredge mining, the separation of gold from its matrix, and prospecting and valuation of the ground. Other sections examine the drilling and testing of shafts, the cost of drilling, and the utilization of the shell dredge or shovel dredge. Several sections are devoted to the mechanical workings of a mining operation.

157.	Golfing	This book contains information on the sport of golf. Chapters discuss the history, styles of golf, match play, handicapping, and etiquette of golf. Lists of golf courses in England, as well as rule charts are included in this book.

158.	Hakluytus Posthumus, or, Purchas his pilgrims : contayning a history of the world in sea voyages and lande travells by Englishmen and others	A historical text documenting information on several areas of the world, such as the Middle East and Europe. This text also discusses early Christian beliefs and philosophies, and includes tales of the author's journeys to the Indies and Greece.

159.	Harbor tales down north	This book describes tales collected by Norman Duncan during his travels on a hospital vessel in the Canadian North, specifically around Newfoundland and Labrador. It includes some biographical information on Mr. Duncan, as well as a number of chapters recounting the fictional stories themselves, such as 'The Siren of Scalawag Run', 'A Madonna of Tinkle Tickle', and 'Small Sam Small'. Each of these fictional stories is accompanied by an illustration.

160.	Hesperos, or, Travels in the West	These volumes describe the travels of the author throughout America in the mid-19th century. They include areas of New England, as well as Boston, New York, Washington, and many areas in the South, such as St. Louis, New Orleans and Mississippi. Chapters discuss the American industrial centers, the White House, American culture, and the intolerance shown to free blacks, even in the Northern States. Also included is discussion of the racism of many Americans towards Irish immigrants, as well as the practice of escaped slaves coming north to live in areas like New York and Boston. The abysmal conditions of black slaves in the South is also discussed, including sections on Lynch law, slanted labour laws, and the effectiveness of the plantation system. The growing tensions between the Northern and the Southern States are also examined.
