The cycle of seasons in Nova Scotia is described, as well as the wild ponies of Sable Island, a summer sail to Labrador, and the popularity of sports on the East Coast of Canada. One section of this text deals specifically with hunting areas on Cape Breton Island. A number of photographs and illustrations are included.

Other chapters document the sled journey that two of the members embarked on that lasted fifteen months, encounters with wildlife such as walrus, and taking care of the sled dogs. Several sections are also devoted to the Island of Saint John, including letters describing the government and customs of that area. An account of the English Seige of Louisbourg in 1758 is also included in one of the letters. Other letters discuss the importance of Cape Breton to both the English and French powers.

There are a number of maps and illustrations in this book.

The abysmal conditions of black slaves in the South is also discussed, including sections on Lynch law, slanted labour laws, and the effectiveness of the plantation system. The growing tensions between the Northern and the Southern States are also examined.
