161. The book of Newfoundland The book of Newfoundland These volumes are a history of Newfoundland, including much information on Newfoundland after Confederation. Large sections deal with the fishing industry in the province, and several photographs of small fishing villages are included. There are lists of the members of government in Newfoundland before Confederation, such as the prime ministers, governors, and executive councils. Other chapters deal with the signing of the new constitution in 1934, the geography of Newfoundland, statistics, and Newfoundland's part in World War I. The second volume includes information on St. John's, the police and firefighters, several different clubs found in Newfoundland, sports such as football, ice hockey, and boxing, and the different religions found in Newfoundland. Many illustrations and photographs are included.

Chapters include information on racial segregation in the military, biographical information on several black officers, the use of black soldiers in the Battle of New Orleans, and the re-enslavement of black soldiers after the American Revolution. The Civil War is also discussed at length, with descriptions of battles at Nashville, South Carolina, and Tennessee, all of which involved black troop regiments. Some information is given on Jefferson Davies, the leader of the Southern States during the Civil War, as well as several examples of his thoughts on the use of black soldiers. Information is presented on how these groups came to be organised, as well as how education was provided for black soldiers after the war.

Chapters include John Cabot's voyage in the 15th century, Jacques Cartier's encounters with the Beothuks in the 16th century, and writings taken from various new sources. Other sections detail the Beothuk manner of living, the country they inhabited, and some examples of the language they spoke. There is also much information on the life of Shanawdithit, the last remaining Beothuk. Several of her drawings are included in this book. Several examples of Beothuk song and poetry can be found in this text as well.

There is a sketch map of Mr. Pike's journey, and a map of the Dominion of Canada.

The section recounting the ten years he spent in Abyssinia describes many things, such as the local geography, the religion of the Abyssinians, the language, everyday life in the mission, and the present condition of Abyssinia. Several chapters deal with his travels throughout the area, and a number of them discuss his encounters with the Druses of Lebanon, their religion, the Greek Orthodox Church, and Assad Shidak the Syrian martyr. Once in Syria, the author describes the local customs, the countryside, importance of religion, and the progress of his own mission. A number of illustrations accompany this text.

A large section is devoted to cockfighting, which was seen as a gentlemanly sporting practice in the 19th century. Fox hunting is another subject which is discussed at length. There are tips on how to keep a racing horse in good condition, recent laws involving cruelty to animals, and good places in which to go stag hunting. There are a number of cricket match results, as well as popular matchups. A number of illustrations are included throughout each of these volumes.
